Vintage Butterick MLP Patterns

This week was not the first time I wanted to find vintage My Little Pony patterns. In the past few years I have sought out these patterns, yet come up with little luck. Sure, the patterns are usually availible on Ebay or Etsy... But... Maybe this is a hot take but I think people who post scans of vintage patterns for money should die in hell forever.

Posting a pattern you made yourself? That's fine, you put work into making it so it makes sense for you to get compensation. Selling a physical copy of a pattern and then shipping the vintage pattern to a seller? That's also fine to me because you're selling them a vintage good. But finding a pattern that's been out of print for 40 years, rubbing your greedy hands together like a super villain and saying "ohoho let me scan this and then sell the png of the image I took for 5-15$" That's shitty and evil and methinks you a scumbag. Especially since preservation of old media is becoming increasingly more important and more and more things become "lost". In 10 years when you are no longer selling your scan of this pattern, what if the pattern just flat out doesn't exist online anymore? A piece of history will be lost and no one will ever be able to make that cool vintage craft again just because you wanted to be greedy :/

That my friends is what inspired me to go on a hunt for these patterns. That and a need to try out the Butterick Plush sewing pattern to try and sew some pony plushes (Maybe as a gift if it turns out well!). So today I am going to be compiling all of the patterns I was able to find from Butterick relating to G1 of My Little Pony. These include both sewing and knitting patterns. I was not able to find complete scans of all the patterns, but if I am able to in the future I will update this article with any additional information I find (I once found Butterick Carebear sewing patterns at the Goodwill bins... Pray for me to find pony patterns and I can hopefully Update this in the future!) I also want to include credit to where these patterns were sourced and to everyone who helped me with these scans.

Also, apologies that This article will be very image heavy with large images! I want to keep the quality of these images as large as possible to prevent details being lost to compression. Be forewarned! You are about to be bombarded by pony patterns!

Butterick Christmas Ornament Felt Pony Sewing Pattern

These patterns were the most readily availible, and in fact I already had them linked on my website under the "Resources and Tutorials" tab. They were scanned and posted by Yello80s on their website. I am only compiling them here again so that all of these sewing patterns can be in one place for you all.

Butterick MLP Plush Patterns

So this one was very difficult. You can find people selling these patterns on Etsy or Ebay, but as you can probably guess from the intro of this post, I didn't want to do that. If I ever get my hands on the physical pattern for these, I will update this section with that. For now I will go over how I got this plush pattern below:

Butterick had 4 pony Plush patterns: Moondancer, Blossom, Firefly and Starshine. The only one I was actually able to get my hands on was Starshine, as I discovered an ancient thread on MLPTP where the user wlyteth uploaded photos of the pattern! However, the photos in the thread are so small that they are basically illegible. The Pattern Pieces themselves are also very faint and hard to see. However, the lovely tumblr user main-chip-data Edited and cleaned up and traced the pattern so that it is actually usable! I am also including the hard to read quality image of the instructions in case you want to zoom into the picture to look at the images on the instructions.

Here is my best attempt at creating instructions for the pattern above:

Each half of the main body of the pony will be sewn together, with the additional leg pieces sewn on the inside of the legs/the stomach area of the pony. Attach the ears. I assume the tail and mane is attached the same way that the ornament patterns have their tails and manes attached. Felt is used for the eyes, and cutiemarks can be felt or embroidered on. The mouth will be sewn into the plushie as well. There is also a piece for the eyelids that you attached over the top of the eyes. The original pattern suggests inserting circles of cardboard into the feet so she can stand stabley (I know the hasbro softie plushies also have cardboard in the bottoms of their feet.) The Pattern suggests using fake eyelashes for the eyes, but you can choose how you want to make the plush yourself of course.

Additionally, this pattern can be modified to make the other pony patterns. The Firefly pattern is the same except for her leg is not lifted in the air like Starshine. You could just make both halfs of the plush symmetrical with her legs standing straight down. Take the wings away from that and you would have the Blossom pattern. Add a horn and you would have the Moondancer pattern.

I also found Star of the Sea on the MLPTP discussing how this pattern suggests using elastic sewn into the jawline, as you can see in the image below.)

Butterick Knitting Patterns: MLP Jacket and Cardigan

This final pattern is for knitting adorable cardigans and sweaters! I assume you could change the colors to make whichever ponies you want it to be :)

These knitting pattern scans were graciously shared with me by horseloaf on Tumblr.

And that is all of the OFFICIAL G1 MLP Patterns that I could get my hands on for free. Again I will update this page in the future if I can find any more. If you have a pattern you would like to share, please contact me! Either commenting on the Neocities profile Or contact me through Tumblr (@Charmsponies). Everything is appreciated. I hope yall enjoy these patterns and can make something cool with them! I am going to be attempting the plushie patterns myself! I would absolutely make the adorable sweater or cardigan if I could sew though its sooo cute TwT
